What is Foot Drop?
Foot drop results from muscle weakness or from a muscle imbalance affecting your ability to clear the ground when stepping forward. Walking can be both difficult and slow and this can be very frustrating.
Foot drop can result from any neurological condition, such as a stroke or MS, or can be caused by a peripheral nerve injury.
How can Physiotherapy help?
The highest priority for many people with limited mobility from a neurological condition is to walk independently
Physiotherapy can help people with foot drop in some of the following ways:
- Strengthening and stretching certain muscles
- Using an individually fitted ankle-foot orthosis to improve heel-strike and balance
- Functional electrical stimulation (FES) to improve walking pattern
